Tairoa Thames Dairy, New Zealand

Dairy

New Zealand Aluminium Smelters

Smelter

The contamination of the smelter with Legionella Pneumophilia nearly stopped the production of the smelter. This would have been a catastrophe as the aluminium would have solidified in the pots and it could have taken up to three years to remove it and to bring the smelter back on line. The project involved a rapid assessment of worker safety, a hazard control plan to sanitise the water circuits in the plant, and an ongoing strategy to treat the water so that Legionella never inhabited the circuits again.
